How to tell them apart

COPD and asthma are two respiratory conditions that share some characteristics and symptoms. In some cases, people with asthma may develop COPD over time, especially if their asthma is not well-managed. This is why it’s not always easy to tell the difference between asthma and COPD.

Vediamo insieme quali sono le caratteristiche che uniscono BPCO e asma e cosa c’è di diverso tra queste due patologie.

COPD and asthma are similar because they are both:

Chronic and inflammatory diseases
Conditions that lead to obstruction of the airways
Characterised by a genetic predisposition
Affected by environmental factors
Often associated with symptoms like coughing, mucus production, and shortness of breath

COPD and asthma are different because:

Has periods of complete respiratory wellness combined with asthma attacks periods, which can sometimes be very severe.

Affects only the airways (bronchi and bronchioles).

Is reversible with proper treatment, and symptoms can come and go.

Typically appears in younger age.

Can be triggered by allergies to external agents (like pollen, dust, or other potential allergens).

Follows a progressive course, worsening over time, with flare-ups that can vary in frequency.

Affects both the airways and the lungs.

Is irreversible, leading to permanent damage.

Usually develops in adulthood (particularly among smokers or former smokers).

In most cases, it is caused by cigarette smoke.
